西垣一派とは、初代は勘四郎吉弘。慶長十八年に豊前中津生まれ。平田彦三の門人として修行し、同流白銀細工の相伝免許を許され、独立後に細川家の抱え工となる。初期の作風は林はに比べて鍔のいびつの崩れた感じで不釣合なものがあり、これが作柄に勘四郎独特の雅趣を添えている。丸型の鍔は布袋腹式につくっつた物があり、下部が張り出した気味になるとともに、肥後鍔の中では、この一派だけに見られる特徴である。
西垣勘平は、二代康四郎の弟。鉄鐔の透彫を得意とし、西垣の伝統を踏まえた、小じんまりと堅く繕って手際の良い作を残している。又、枯木象嵌が得意であり、金性もよく上手である。Aorigata Tetsumigakiji Jisukashi Kebori Marumimi

Kanpei Nishigaki is the younger brother of Koshiro II. He specializes in the openwork of iron tsuba, and has left behind neatly and neatly repaired works based on the tradition of Nishigaki. In addition, he is good at dead tree inlay, and is also good at gold quality.
