安定は、紀伊石堂の出身で、元和四年生まれ、名を富田宗兵衛といい、江戸に出て和泉守兼重の弟子となり、その後二代康継にも師事、虎徹にも影響を与えたと伝える。新刀上作、切れ味には定評があり、新選組沖田総司の愛刀としても知られる。この刀は、身幅広く、元先の幅差つき、反りの浅い寛文新刀の姿で、板目肌つみ、地沸微塵に厚くつき、地景よく入る肌立った美しい地鉄に、直刃調にほつれ・湯走り・打ちのけ・食い違い・二十刃など掛り、金筋・沸筋・砂流し頻りに掛るなど刃中よく働き、匂口明るく冴える優品である。Yasusada was born in Ishidou, Kii, and was born in the 4th year of Genna.
