It is said that they moved from Yamashiro during the late Kamakura period and the Nanboku-cho period, but swordsmiths such as Unsho, Unji, and Unju appeared in Bizen Ukannosyo whose style differed from that of the Osafune school, and because their signatures all include the character "Un," this school is also known as the Unrui, or Ukan school, after the place where they lived.
Unju is said to be the son of Unji, and surviving works dated Bunwa, Enbun, and Jouji make it clear when he was active.
Unji's works are unique even among Bizen items of the time, and include works that combine Bizen style with the charm of the Rai school of Yamashiro and the Aoe school of Bicchu, as well as a mix of Yamato style.
