The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. The first Yujo established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (IEbori) by compiling the Mino carving style.
The works of the first three generations of the Goto family, the first Yujou, the second Sojou, and the third Johshin, are known as Ko-Goto(Old Goto). The third Joshin was born in Kyoto in 9th Eisyo(1512) as the eldest son of the second Joshin. He served as an aide to Ashikaga Yoshiharu and Yoshiteru, combining goldsmithing with government affairs, and is said to have had a bold personality, with many of his works handed down to us as being of a formidable style.
