国家刀匠は、本名吉原荘二、吉原将博(二代国家)の次男、吉原義人の弟として昭和20年に生まれ、祖父である昭和の名工初代国家より作刀を学び、新作名刀展で努力賞、奨励賞、特賞を多数受賞、昭和57年には37歳の若さで無鑑査認定、三代目国家を襲名する。伊勢神宮式年遷宮御神宝太刀を三回製作。平成20年には、全日本刀匠会の会長に就任、東京都無形文化財保持者に認定。備前伝古名刀の再現を目指し、華やかな重花丁子乱れの一文字に範を取った作風を得意とする。この刀は、身幅広く3.5cmもあり、反り深く、腰反りつき、鋒詰まりごころの猪首風となる鎌倉中期の豪壮な体配で、小板目肌に、小杢目よく交え、地沸微塵に厚く付き、冴えた地鉄に、焼き深く足葉長く頻りに入る丁子乱れが華やかなに乱れる傑作である。Kuniie swordsmith, whose real name is Yoshiwara Shouji, was born in 1945 as the second son of Yoshiwara Masahiro (the second Kuniie) and the younger brother of Yoshiwara Yoshindo.
He learned sword making from his grandfather, the first Showa master swordsmith, Kuniie, and won numerous awards, including the Effort Award, Encouragement Award, and Special Award at the New Famous Sword Exhibition. In 1982, at the young age of 37, he was certified as a swordsmith without examination and took on the name of Kuniie III.
He has made three Onshinpo Tachi swords for the Shikinen Sengu ceremony at Ise Jingu Shrine.
In 2008, he was appointed chairman of the All Japan Swordsmith Association and was recognized as a holder of the Tokyo Mukei Bunkazai (Intangible Cultural Property.)Aiming to reproduce ancient famous Bizen swords, he specializes in a style modeled on the gorgeous Ichimonji of Juka-Chouji-Midare.
