- 兼重は、越前に生まれ、寛永初年ごろ江戸に移り、藤堂高虎のお抱工となり、和泉大掾を受領、その後和泉守に転任、年紀作は寛永初年から万治に至る。作風は、直刃に浅いのたれを交え、小沸よくつき、匂口明るく冴えるなど、同郷の弟子と伝わる虎徹に迫る出来のものも見受けられる。その切れ味は定評があり、宮本武蔵の愛刀であったという。この刀は、身幅広く3.2cmもある豪壮な姿で、地沸微塵に厚く付き、冴え渡る精良な地鉄に、中直刃調に、のたれて、足・葉よく入り、食い違い・二十刃頻りに掛り、輝く沸が深くつき、匂深く、匂口明るく冴え、沸筋・砂流し頻りに掛り覇気溢れる傑作である。Kaneshige was born in Echizen and moved to Edo around the beginning of the Kanei era, where he became a swordsmith employed by Todo Takatora and received the title of IzuminoDaijo. He was later transferred to Izuminokami, and made swords from the early Kan'ei period through to the Manji period.
His style is characterized by Suguha with a shallow Notare, Small-Nie entered frequently, Nioikuchi is bright and clear. Some of the swords are almost as good as those of Kotetsu, who is said to have been made by a disciple from the same hometown. Its sharpness is well-known, and it is said to have been Miyamoto Musashi's favorite sword.
