The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Tenjo. The first Yujo established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (IEbori) by compiling the Mino carving style.
The works of the first three generations of the Goto family, the first Yujo, the second Sojo, and the third Johshin, are known as Ko-Goto(Old Goto).
The 10th head of the Goto family, Renjo, was born in Kyoto in 1627 as the fourth son of the 8th head, Mitsushige.
His name was Mitsutomo. He inherited the family headship in 1646, and in 1662, he was ordered by the shogunate to leave Kyoto for Edo. He was a skilled craftsman in the Goto family. He lived in Edo until the 17th generation, Tenjo, passed away in 1708.
