- 元長は、名を青木喜兵衛といい、本国は摂津で、尾張信高門となり初銘を信直、後に助高・薩摩元平にも学び、元長と銘を改めている。この刀は、身幅4cmと極めて広く、重ねも1cmを超え、重量も1,153gもある反りの深い豪壮刀で、掻き流しの棒樋がその姿を引き締めている。地沸が微塵に厚くつく精良な地鉄は青く明るく冴え渡り、焼き幅大きな互の目丁子に玉焼き・三日月を頻りに掛り、華やかに乱れ、足・葉太くよく入り、小沸がキラキラと深く美しく輝き、金筋砂流し頻りに掛り、刃中の働き見事で、匂深く、匂口明るく冴え渡り、助広をも凌駕する出来の最高傑作である。Motonaga's real name was Aoki Kihei, he was originally from Settsu, and was a school of Owari Nobutaka.His original name was Nobunao, but he later learned from Suketaka and Satsuma Genpei, and changed it to Motonaga.
