The Umetada family was a prestigious family on par with the Goto family, and was given important duties related to swords in addition to crafting tsuba. Umetada Myouju is said to be the originator of new swords. He is also famous as the teacher of the first Tadayoshi, but he was born in 1559, commonly known as Hikojiro, First Mei Soukichi, and later became a priest and called himself Tsurumine Myoujyu. There are few swords made by Myoujyu in existence, and most of them are designated as Juyo Bunkazai, Juyo Bijutsuhin, or Tokubetsu Juyo. Myoujyu is also famous for its metalwork, and its tsuba is also designated as Juyo Bunkazai. The style of the Tsuba is to use various metals such as Suaka, Syakudou, Shinchu-tetsu(plain copper, red copper, and brass iron), and to create patterns using the Hira-Zougan(flat inlay technique). Zugara(The designs) are in the style of the gorgeous designs of the Momoyama period, and the pictorial designs include frames, loquats, Kunenbo(C. reticulata 'Kunenbo' ), pine and bamboo, etc.
