The Ayanokoji school was active from the early to mid-Kamakura period, and the founder of the school, Sadatoshi, is cited as a representative worker, as well as Sadakichi,Sadanori,Jougou, and Sueyuki.
The characteristics of the Ayanokoji school include the graceful appearance of Tachi, which is typical of Yamashiro-den, and the elaborate jigane, but it presents a style that goes back in time to the Awataguchi and Rai schools of the same Yamashiro.
Traditionally, it was considered to be of the same era as the Rai school's Sokokugyo, but in recent years, the mainstream view is that it is a school close to the Sanjo and Gojo schools.
