- 長曽祢虎徹は、江州彦根の長曽祢に生まれ、越前福井で甲冑師となり、承応頃（1652年）、五十歳の時に江戸に移り刀鍛冶に転じた。通称を三之丞と称し、入道して「こてつ入道」といい、初めは「古鉄」の字を用い、後に「虎徹」（はねとら銘）の文字を、さらに寛文四年からは「乕徹」（はことら銘）を使用している。年紀作は明暦二年から、延宝五年に渡り、延宝六年七十余歳で上野池之端に没する。当時その斬新な作風は一世を風靡し、新刀随一の巨匠として技量は高く評価されている。この刀は、寛文四年六月の年紀が入るはこ虎銘に変わる直前の作で、反りの浅い寛文新刀の姿を呈し、地沸微塵に厚く付き、地景入る冴えた地鉄に、互の目が連れた所謂数珠刃と呼称される刃を交え、さらに瓢箪刃も交え変化があり、湯走り・二十刃掛り、足・葉よく入り、沸よく付き、金筋・沸筋・砂流し頻りに掛るなど刃中よく働き、覇気溢れ、匂深く、匂口明るく冴え渡る傑作である。Nagasone Kotetsu was born in Nagasone Kotetsu in Hikone, Echizen, and became an armorer in Echizen Fukui.
