- 綾小路派は、鎌倉初期から中期にかけて活躍した一派で、一派の祖である定利が代表工として挙げられ、他に定吉、定則、定業、末行などがいる。綾小路派の特色としては、如何にも山城伝らしい優美な太刀姿や精緻な地鉄などが挙げられるが、同じ山城の粟田口派や来派よりも時代を遡る作風を呈し、従来、来派の祖国行と同時代とされてきたが、近年三条派や五条派に近い流派という見方が主流となっている。この刀は、身幅広く、反り深く、腰反りつき、先伏せごころで小鋒となる優美で凛然とした平安後期から鎌倉初期の太刀姿で、板目肌に、杢目肌交じり、地沸厚くつく精良で美しい地鉄に、小乱れに、小互の目交じり、湯走り・飛焼き頻りに掛り、小足・葉頻りに入り、小沸よくつき、金筋砂流し頻りに掛り、刃中の働き豊かで、潤みごころを呈するなど、古雅な出来で、定利の見どころがよく示された優品である。The Ayanokouji school was active from the early to mid-Kamakura period, and the founder of the school, Sadatoshi, is cited as a representative worker, as well as Sadakichi, Sadanori,Jougou, and Sueyuki.
The characteristics of the Ayanokouji school include the graceful appearance of Tachi, which is typical of Yamashiro-den, and the elaborate jigane, but it presents a style that goes back in time to the Awataguchi and Rai schools of the same Yamashiro.
Traditionally, it was considered to be of the same era as the Rai school's Sokokugyo, but in recent years, the mainstream view is that it is a school close to the Sanjo and Gojo schools.
This sword has wide Mihaba, Deep Sori, Koshizori-tsuki, Sakifusegokoro, Small-Kissaki and a graceful and dignified sword from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period.
