- 堀川国広は、元は九州日向の飫肥城主であった伊東家に仕えた武士で、同家没落後に山伏となって諸国を遍歴しつつ鍛刀技術を磨き、各地で作刀した後に慶長四年（１５９９年）より京都の一条堀川に定住し、堀川一門と呼ばれる優れた弟子達を育てた。越後守国儔や出羽大掾国路、大隈掾正弘などの直系の弟子達に加え、孫弟子には井上真改、曾孫弟子には津田助広と枝葉のように広がった一門には新刀を代表する名工が多く名を連ね、まさに国広は新刀の祖と讃えられるに相応しい名工である。この刀は、板目肌に杢目肌交じり、地沸が厚くつき、大小の地鉄が美しく輝き、肌立ちごころの所謂堀川肌と呼ばれる地鉄に、のたれに互の目・丁子刃交じり、湯走り・飛び焼き掛り、足・葉入り、沸が深くよくつき、匂口明るい。刀身彫も見事である。Kunihiro Horikawa was originally a samurai who served the Ito family, who were the lords of Obi Castle in Hyuga, Kyushu. In 1599, he settled down in Ichijo Horikawa, Kyoto, and raised a group of excellent disciples called the Horikawa clan.
In addition to his direct disciples such as Echigonokami Kunitomo, Dewa Daijo Kunimichi, and Okuma Jo Masahiro, his grandchild Shinkai Inoue and his great-grandchild Sukehiro Tsuda are among the many master craftsmen who represent the new sword. Kunihiro is truly a master craftsman worthy of being praised as the originator of new swords.
This sword has a thick Jinie and Itame-hada and Mixed Mokume-hada, the large and small Jigane shines beautifully, Hadatachigokoro called Horikawa-hada.
Notare , Gnome and Mixed Chouji-ba, Yubashiri and Tobiyakikakari. There are Ashi and You, Deep Nie entered often, Nioikuchi is bright, Toshinbori(The sword carving) is also splendid.
