左行秀は、名を豊永久兵衛といい、伊藤又兵衛盛重の子として文化十年筑前国に生まれ、自ら筑前左文字三十九代目を名乗っている。天保初年江戸に出て細川正義門人清水久義に学び、弘化三年34歳の時、土佐藩工関田勝広の勧めで、土佐に下った。文久二年に再び江戸に上り土佐藩下屋敷で鍛刀し、安政二年に勝広の死に伴い藩工に任じられたが、慶応三年（１８６７年）五月に上司の板垣退助との不和があり土佐へ移り、明治三年（１８７０年）まで同地で鍛刀した。晩年は、作刀から離れ、嫡子幾馬と横浜で暮らしている。明治二十年75歳没。坂本龍馬が使っていたとされる兄権平の注文打「嘉永元年応阪本直方需造焉」は著名であるが、本刀も同じく雉腿茎になっており、長さも同じく80cmを超え、坂本直方所持の伝来があり、安政三年に再度注文したものと思われる。
この刀は、3.3cmと身幅広く、反り浅めで元先の幅差つき、鋒小さくなる勤王刀の姿で、柾目肌つみ、地沸が微塵に厚く付く美しい地鉄に、直刃調、小互の目交じり、湯走り・二重刃掛かり、金筋長く頻りにかかるなど刃中もよく沸えて覇気溢れ、小足・葉頻りに入り、地刃共に冴え渡る傑作である。旧家よりの初だしで、兵庫昭和26年大名登録、初刃が残る健全さで、本年6月の審査で特保を取り、証書が届いたばかりの名品です。Sano Yukihide, whose name was Toyonaga Kyubeii, was born in Chikuzen Province in the Bunka 10th year as the son of Ito Matabee Morishige, and calls himself the 39th generation of Chikuzen Samonji.
In the first year of Tenpo, he went to Edo to study under Hisayoshi Shimizu, a disciple of Masayoshi Hosokawa, and at the age of 34, in the third year of Koka, he moved to Tosa at the recommendation of Katsuhiro Sekida, a craftsman of the Tosa domain.
In the 2nd year of the Bunkyu era, he returned to Edo and forged swords in the lower residence of the Tosa domain, and in the 2nd year of the Ansei era, he was appointed as a domain craftsman after Katsuhiro's death, but in May 1867, he had a falling out with his superior, Taisuke Itagaki. He moved to Tosa, where peace existed, and continued to forge swords there until 1870. In his later years, he took a break from making swords and lived in Yokohama with his son Ikuma. He passed away at the age of 75 in the 20th year of the Meiji era.
