- 福岡一文字派は鎌倉初期、後鳥羽院御番鍛冶則宗を祖として始まると伝え、鎌倉中期にかけて多くの良工が輩出した。この派が一文字と呼称される所以は、茎に｢一｣の字をきることに因るが、銘は｢一｣の字のみのものと、他に｢一｣の字の下にさらに個銘を加えるもの、また個銘だけのものもある。これらの中で最も華やかで変化に富んだ丁子乱れの作風を展開しているのは、鎌倉中期の作である。この刀は、反り深く、身幅3.2cmと広く、腰反り踏ん張りつく豪壮な姿、完全に生ぶで、区送りも無く、目釘穴も一つの作刀時の姿のままとなる上杉家伝来と伝える太刀で、乱れ映りが立ち、地沸が微塵につく精良な地鉄に、丁子乱れに、互の目・飛び焼きなど複雑に交え、足・葉頻りに入り、小沸深くつき、物打ち辺り沸強くつき、金筋砂流し頻りに掛り、匂口明るく冴える。覇気溢れ、華やかな出来で、研ぎ減りも無く、頗る健全、重量も927gもある文化財級の名品である。The Fukuoka Ichimonji school reportedly started in the early Kamakura period with the Goban Kaji Norimune sect of Go-Tobain as the ancestor, and many good workers were produced in the middle of the Kamakura period.
