堀川国広は、元は九州日向の飫肥城主であった伊東家に仕えた武士で、同家没落後に山伏となって諸国を遍歴しつつ鍛刀技術を磨き、各地で作刀した後に慶長四年（１５９９年）より京都の一条堀川に定住し、堀川一門と呼ばれる優れた弟子達を育てた。越後守国儔や出羽大掾国路、大隈掾正弘などの直系の弟子達に加え、孫弟子には井上真改、曾孫弟子には津田助広と枝葉のように広がった一門には新刀を代表する名工が多く名を連ね、まさに国広は新刀の祖と讃えられるに相応しい名工である。この刀は、身幅広く、先幅やや細く、反り深く、茎尻も細くなる優美な姿で、板目肌に杢目肌交じり、地沸が厚くつき、地景よく入る肌立ちごころの所謂堀川肌と呼ばれる地鉄に、のたれに互の目・丁子刃交じり、湯走り掛り、足・葉太く入り、大小の沸が深く美しくよくつき、輝く金筋が頻りにかかり、匂深く、匂口明るく冴える。薩摩では、柄から茎が抜けないように茎に塩を付け錆で固着させたといい、茎に傷みが見られるのは惜しまれるが、上の出来は抜群で、華やかで覇気溢れる傑作である。珍しい琉球政府の登録証が付く。Kunihiro Horikawa was originally a samurai who served the Ito family, who were the lords of Obi Castle in Hyuga, Kyushu. In addition to direct disciples such as Echigonokami Kunitomo, Dewa Daijo Kunimichi, and Okumajo Masahiro, his grandchild Shinkai Inoue and great-grandchild Sukehiro Tsuda represent Shinto in a family that has spread like branches and leaves. Many master craftsmen are listed, and Kunihiro is truly a master craftsman who deserves to be praised as the originator of new swords.
This sword has a wide Mihaba, a slightly narrow Sakihaba, Deep Sori, Nakagojiri also has an elegant figure that becomes thinner. Mixed Itamehada and Mokumehada, Jinie fine and thick, Chikei entered well, Hadadachigokoro so-called Horikawa-hada Jigane, Notare, Gunome, Mixed Choujiba , Yubashiri-kakari, Ashi and You entered thick, Large and small Nie are deeply and beautifully attached , Shining Kinsuji shikirini-kakari, Deep Nioi, and Nioikuchi is bright and clear. It is said that in Satsuma, salt was added to the nakago to prevent the stem from coming off the handle, and the nakago was fixed with rust.
