- 安定は、紀伊石堂の出身で、元和四年生まれ、名を富田宗兵衛といい、江戸に出て和泉守兼重の弟子となり、後二代康継に師事、虎徹にも影響を与えたと伝える。新刀上作、切れ味には定評があり、新選組沖田総司の愛刀としても知られる。この刀は、二尺五寸二分の長さで区送り無しの生ぶな姿と、山野勘十郎の裁断銘が金象嵌で入る希少な一口である。身幅3.2cmと広く、重量も923gあり、反りやや浅い寛文新刀の豪壮な姿で、小板目肌に、板目に杢目肌交じり、地沸微塵に厚くつき、地景細かく入る美しい地鉄に、焼き幅大きな互の目に、丁子刃・飛焼きなど交え、華やかに乱れ、沸深くつき、大小の沸が美しく輝き、沸筋・砂流し頻りに掛るなど刃中よく働き、匂深く、匂口明るく冴える。安定の最高傑作である。Yasusada was born in Ishidou, Kii, and was born in the 4th year of Genna. His name is Munebei Tomita. He went to Edo and became a disciple of Izuminokami Kanesada, studied under the second generation Yasutsugu, and reportedly influenced Kotetsu.
