- 直綱は、名を久右衛門といい、正宗門と伝え、正宗十哲の一人に数えられる名工で、南北朝時代に石見国出羽に住し鍛刀した。その作風は、黒みがある地鉄に、杢を交えて地景が入り、刃文は互の目を主調として、砂流しかかるなど相州伝の特徴が顕著である。この刀は、薙刀直しで、板目肌よく練れて、杢目を交えて、地景よく入り、地沸微塵につき、黒味掛かった地鉄が冴え、互の目に、丁子刃・湯走り・飛び焼き・二十刃など掛り、華やかに乱れ、沸匂が美しく絡み、足・葉頻りに入り、金筋・沸筋・砂流し幾重にも頻りに掛り、匂深く、匂口明るく冴える。刃中の働き盛んで、覇気溢れる直綱の特色がよく現れた傑作である。Naotsuna, whose name was Kyuemon, is said to be Masamunemon, and was a master craftsman counted as one of the Masamune Jittetsu. During the Nanbokucho era, he lived and worked in Dewa, Iwami Province.
