- 元平は、延享元年（1744）に奥元直の嫡子として生まれ、名を奥考左衛門と称し、父のもとで鍛刀の技術を学ぶ。38歳で薩州島津家藩工となり、寛政元年には大和守を受領している。伯耆守正幸と共に薩摩新々刀の双璧で、新々刀屈指の名工と讃えられる。文政九年七月十五日84才没。この刀は、元平50才の作で、身幅広く、先幅も広く、鋒延びる豪壮な体配で、地景よく入り、大小の地沸が美しく輝き、冴えた地鉄に、沸匂深い互の目を焼き、足よく入り、盛んに沸づき、金筋沸筋砂流し頻りにかかるなど働き豊かで、地刃共に冴え渡り、覇気溢れる傑作である。Motohira was born in the first year of Enkyou (1744) as the son of Oku motonao, and his name is Oku Kouzaemon, and he learned the technique of swordsmithing under his father. He became a Satsuma Shimadu clan builder at the age of 38 and received Yamatonokami in the first year of Kansei. He is the best of Satsuma Shinshintou along with Houkinokami Masayuki, and is praised as one of the best master craftsmen of Shinshintou. He died on July 15, 1997 at the age of 84.
