- 陸奥守忠吉は、名を橋本新三郎といい、寛永十四年（１６３７年）に近江大掾忠広の長男として生まれ、万治三年（１６６０年）十月に陸奥大掾を受領、翌年の寛文元年（１６６１年）八月に陸奥守に転任、父近江大掾忠広より7年早く、貞享三年（１６８６年）一月に50歳で没したため、ほとんど父の代作に従事していたものと考えられる。したがって、長命であった祖父や父と比べて三代忠吉自身の作刀は少ないが、出来の優れた作刀が多く、地鉄の精緻や地刃の冴えにおいては初代を凌駕するといわれており、価格に於いても、初代忠吉よりも高く評価されている。この刀は、身幅3.2cmと広く、重ね厚く、反りやや浅い寛文新刀の豪壮な姿で、小杢目肌がよく錬れて、地沸微塵に厚くつき、地景細かく入る所謂小糠肌と呼称される究極の冴えた地鉄に、焼き幅大きな互の目に、丁子刃交じり、足・葉よく入り、小沸深くよくつき、金筋幾重にも頻りに掛り、匂深く、匂口明るく冴え渡る。田野辺先生も乱刃屈指ノ優品と記している通り三代陸奥の最高傑作である。Mutsunokami Tadayoshi, whose name is Shinsaburo Hashimoto, was born in 1637 as the eldest son of Oumidaijou Tadahiro, and received Mutsudaijou in October 1660.He was transferred to Mutsunokami in August of the first year of Kanbun (1661) the following year, and died at the age of 50 in January of the third year of Jokyo (1686), seven years earlier than his father Oumidaijou Tadahiro, so he was mostly engaged in his father's work.
