藤家は、足利義政に使えた初代祐乗から十七代典乗まで、将軍家の御用を務め役４００年もの長き繁栄した。初代祐乗は美濃彫様式を集大成して精巧で格式高い後藤彫（家彫）を確立した。
後藤家上三代、初代祐乗、二代宗乗、三代乗真の作を古後藤と呼称する。
宗乗は、祐乗の次男。後藤宗家の二代目。

The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. Yujo I established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (Iebori) by compiling the Mino carving style. The Goto family's works by three generations of the Goto family, Yujo the first, Soujou the second, and Johshin the third, are called Kogoto.
Soujou is the second son of Yujou. He is the second head of the Goto family.
