後藤家は、足利義政に使えた初代祐乗から十七代典乗まで、将軍家の御用を務め役４００年もの長き繁栄した。初代祐乗は美濃彫様式を集大成して精巧で格式高い後藤彫（家彫）を確立した。

栄乗は1577年五代徳乗の長男として生まれた。豊臣家に使えるが、豊臣家没落後再興を徳川幕府にゆるされ,1616年二代将軍秀忠から分銅大判改役(あらためやく)・彫物役に任じられた。変動の激しい時代に後藤の名誉を保持しながら彫金、文化、財務の多方面の分野に活躍した。元和3年4月4日死去。

The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. The first Yujo established Goto-bori (Ie-bori), which was elaborate and highly prestigious, by compiling the Mino-bori style.
