The Umetada family was a prestigious family on par with the Goto family, and was given important duties related to swords in addition to crafting tsuba. Umetada Myouju is said to be the originator of new swords. He is also famous as the teacher of the first Tadayoshi, but he was born in 1559, commonly known as Hikojiro, Hatsume Sokichi, and later became a priest and called himself Tsurumine Myouju. There are few swords made by Myouju in existence, and most of them are designated as Important Cultural Properties, Important Art Objects, or Specially Important.
