The Umetada family was a prestigious family on par with the Goto family, and was given important duties related to swords in addition to crafting tsuba.

Umetada Myouju is said to be the originator of new swords. He is also famous as the teacher of the first Tadayoshi, but he was born in 1559 and was commonly known as Hikojiro.

His initial name was Muneyoshi, and later he took the name Tsurumine Myouju.

There are few existing swords made by Myouju, and most of them are designated as Juyo Bunkazai, Juyo Bijutsuhin, Tokubetsu Juyo, etc. Myouju is also famous for its metalwork, and its tsuba is also designated as an important cultural property.

His tsuba style uses various base metals such as Suaka, Syakudo, and brass iron, and expresses the pattern with the technique of Hirazougan. The designs are in the Momoyama period's splendid design style, and the picture style includes grapes, loquats, ninnenbo, and pine bamboo.
