The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. The first Yujo established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (IEbori) by compiling the Mino carving style.
The works of the first three generations of the Goto family, the first Yujou, the second Sojou, and the third Johshin, are known as Ko-Goto(Old Goto). Teijo was the ninth head of the Goto family, born in 1603 (Keicho 8) and died in 1673 (Kanbun 13), and the eldest son of the seventh head, Kenjo. After the death of the eighth lord, Sokujo, he succeeded to the headship of the family and acted as guardian to the tenth lord, Renjo, who was still a child. He also served the Maeda family of Kaga after Kenjo and was granted the title of Hokkyo.
