The subject of the painting, Tori(Bird)sashi, is the practice of catching small birds with a bird catcher attached to the end of a thin bamboo pole. Teijo was the ninth head of the Goto family, and lived from(1603) to Kanbun 13th(1673). and was the eldest son of the seventh head Kenjo. After the death of the eighth lord, Sokujo, the tenth lord, Renjo, was still a child, so he succeeded the head family and acted as guardian to Renjo. He also succeeded Kenjo in serving the Maeda family of Kaga, and was awarded the title of Hokyo.
