The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. The first Yujo established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (IEbori) by compiling the Mino carving style.
The works of the first three generations of the Goto family, the first Yujou, the second Sojou, and the third Johshin, are known as Ko-Goto(Old Goto).
Mitsunori, the fourth head of the main Goto family, was born in 2nd Kyouroku(1529) as the eldest son of Goto Josho. He served both Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, holding the official position responsible for the production of *oban* (large gold coins) and *fundo* (gold weights). He held the rank of *Hougen*. He passed away on the 14th day of March of Genna 6 (1620) at the age of 92. He was commonly known as Shiroubei.
