白河法皇が祇園女御のもとに赴こうとこの辺りを通った時に、前方に鬼のようなものが見えました。討伐を命じられた平忠盛は鬼の正体を見定めるために生け捕りにしたところ、灯籠に明かりを灯そうとしていた社僧でした。人々は忠盛の思慮深さと勇ましさを称えた。Tatemarugata Shibuichi-Migakiji Takabori Kebori Suemon-Zougan-Iroe Kakumimi
The subject of the painting is "Gion Tadamori" from the Tale of the Heike.
When Emperor Shirakawa passed through this area on his way to visit Empress Gion, he spotted something resembling a demon ahead. Tairano Tadamori was ordered to slay the demon, and when he captured it alive to determine its true identity, he discovered that it was a shrine priest who was trying to light a lantern. People praised Tadamori for his thoughtfulness and bravery.
