Hikone carving is characterized by two main styles: one using iron or shakudo (a copper alloy) as the base metal, featuring intricate depictions of spring and autumn flowers and birds on iron tsuba (sword guards), and the other using Nikubori-Jisukashi (a style depicting Japanese and Chinese figures with pine trees and other motifs).
A representative metalworker is said to be Munenori.
