The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. The first Yujo established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (IEbori) by compiling the Mino carving style.
The works of the first three generations of the Goto family, the first Yujou, the second Sojou, and the third Johshin, are known as Ko-Goto(Old Goto).
The third generation Jhoshin was born in Kyoto in 1512 (Eisho 9), the eldest son of the second generation Soujou. He served Ashikaga Yoshiharu and Yoshiteru as a close confidant, handling both metal engraving and political affairs. He is said to have had a bold and spirited personality, and his works, characterized by a powerful and imposing style, have been passed down through generations.
A skilled craftsman. It is said that he died in battle in 1562(Eiroku 5), struck by a stray arrow.
