- 元平は、延享元年（1744）に奥元直の嫡子として生まれ、名を奥考左衛門と称し、父のもとで鍛刀の技術を学ぶ。38歳で薩州島津家藩工となり、寛政元年には大和守を受領している。伯耆守正幸と共に薩摩新々刀の双璧で、新々刀屈指の名工と讃えられる。文政九年七月十五日84才没。この刀は、小杢目肌つみ、地景黒く頻りに入り、精良で冴えた地鉄に、浅くのたれて、小互の目交じり、食い違い・二十刃頻りに掛り、足よく入り、盛んに沸づき、輝く沸が深くつき、砂流し頻りに掛り、匂深く、匂口明るく冴える優品である。Motohira was born in the first year of Enkyou (1744) as the son of Oku motonao, and his name is Oku Kouzaemon, and he learned the technique of swordsmithing under his father. He became a Satsuma Shimadu clan builder at the age of 38 and received Yamatonokami in the first year of Kansei. He is the best of Satsuma Shinshintou along with Houkinokami Masayuki, and is praised as one of the best master craftsmen of Shinshintou. He died on July 15, 1997 at the age of 84.
