後藤家は、足利義政に使えた初代祐乗から十七代典乗まで、将軍家の御用を務め役４００年もの長き繁栄した。初代祐乗は美濃彫様式を集大成して精巧で格式高い後藤彫（家彫）を確立した。後藤家上三代、初代祐乗、二代宗乗、三代乗真の作を古後藤と呼称する。
後藤宗家十五代真乗は、先代桂乗の嫡男として1785年に生まれる。名は光美（みつよし）。1834年55歳で逝去。Shibuichi-Migakiji Kebori Hirazougan
The Goto family prospered for 400 years, serving the shogunate family from the first Yujo who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa to the 17th Norijo. Yujo I established the elaborate and prestigious Goto carving (Iebori) by compiling the Mino carving style. The Goto family's works by three generations of the Goto family, Yujo the first, Munejo the second, and Jozane the third, are called Kogoto.
