- 陸奥守忠吉は、名を橋本新三郎といい、寛永十四年（１６３７年）に近江大掾忠広の長男として生まれ、万治三年（１６６０年）十月に陸奥大掾を受領、翌年の寛文元年（１６６１年）八月に陸奥守に転任、父近江大掾忠広より7年早く、貞享三年（１６８６年）一月に50歳で没したため、ほとんど父の代作に従事していたものと考えられる。したがって、長命であった祖父や父と比べて三代忠吉自身の作刀は少ないが、出来の優れた作刀が多く、地鉄の精緻や地刃の冴えにおいては初代を凌駕するといわれており、価格に於いても、初代忠吉よりも高く評価されている。この刀は、ニ尺四寸七分の長さに、身幅3.2cmと広く、反りやや浅い寛文頃の姿で、小板目肌がよく錬れて、地沸微塵に厚くつき、地景細かく入る究極に美しい冴えた地鉄に、互の目に丁子を交じえた華やかな刃を焼き、足・葉太く頻りに入り、小沸深くよくつき、金筋・砂流し掛り、匂深く、匂口明るく冴え渡る最高傑作である。Mutsu no kami Tadayoshi, whose name was Shinzaburo Hashimoto, was born in 1637 as the eldest son of Omi Daijo Tadahiro.
