Enjyu Taro Kunimura is considered the de facto founder of the Enjyu school; he was the son of Hiromura of the Yamato Senjyuin school and the son-in-law of the renowned Yamashiro smith Rai Kuniyuki. Later, at the invitation of the Kikuchi clan of Higo, he relocated to Waifu in Kikuchi District and laid the foundations for the Enjyu school of swordsmithing. Kunitoki—said to be the son or younger brother of Kunimura—was a master swordsmith representing the Enjyu school; he was active in Kikuchi District, Higo Province (present-day Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture) from the late Kamakura period through the early Nanbokucho period.
