- 重国は、大和伝手掻派の末裔で、名を九郎三郎といい、駿府の徳川家康に召されたのち、元和頃に紀州徳川家初代の徳川頼宣に従って紀州に移った新刀期屈指の名工である。本作は、身幅広く、堂々とした姿で、板目肌に、杢目肌交じり、鎬地は柾掛り、地沸微塵に厚くつき、地景頻りに入る地鉄に、大のたれに、互の目交じり、沸が深くつき、金筋頻りに掛り、匂深く、沸匂が美しく絡み、匂口明るく冴え渡る屈指の出来で、頗る健全、正宗と彷彿とさせる出来の傑作である。Shigekuni was a descendant of the Yamato Den Tekaki school, and his name was Kurozaburo.
He was one of the most famous craftsmen of the Shinto era, and after being called by Ieyasu Tokugawa of Sunpu, he moved to Kishu around the Genwa era following Yorinobu Tokugawa, the founder of the Kishu Tokugawa family.
