- 保昌派は、鎌倉後期の貞宗を祖とすると伝え、大和国高市郡に住し、貞宗・貞吉・貞清等、「貞」の字を通字とした。総柾目鍛の地鉄を得意とし、黒味をおびた地景が頻りに入る肌合いが同派の特色である。この刀は、身幅広く、腰反り付き、中鋒となる鎌倉末期から南北朝初期の姿で、柾目肌に、地沸厚くつき、地景が細かく入る美しい地鉄に、直刃調に、ほつれ・小互の目など交じり、湯走り掛り、幾重にも縞掛り、沸が美しく輝き、金筋長く幾重にも頻りに掛るなどなど、刃中の働き見事で、匂深く、匂口明るい傑作である。The Hosyo school is said to have its origin in Sadamune of the late Kamakura period, lived in Takaichi District, Yamato Province, and used the character ``Sada'' as a common character, such as Sadamune, Sadayoshi, and Sadakiyo.
