Drscription
The first Kunikane was a descendant of Yamato Yasumasa and was named Hongo Genzo. He was born in Sendai in 1592(1st Bunroku) and, by order of Date Masamune, became a disciple of Ecchu no Kami Masatoshi in Kyoto. He returned to Sendai, and in 1626(3rd Kanei) he received the title of Yamashiro Daijo, recreating the style of Yamato Yasumasaden.
He died in the fourth year of Kanbun(1664)at the age of 74.
Kunikane II, called Hongo Kichiemon, was born in 1611(16th Keicho) as the son of the first Kunikane, inherited the family headship at the age of 34 in 1645, and received the title of Yamashironokami in 1667(7th Kanbun). He died in the 12th Kanbun(1672), From then on, the Kunikane family prospered greatly as craftsmen in the Sendai domain until the Meiji-Ishin(restoration).
This sword was made by the Kunikane II before he was appointed Yamashironokami, and has thick Jinie and Masamehada, Black Jigane shining beautiful and clear, There are long Ashi and Gunome-Chouji gorgeously, Big and Small-Nie entered deeply and shining beautifully, as if silver sand had been sprinkled on top, Kinsuji and Sunagashi-shikirinikakari, Deep Nioi and Nioikuchi is bright and clear, This is the second Kunikane's masterpiece.
