The Niou school flourished in the second year of Bun'ei (1125) at the end of the Heian period, when Suo Province (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) became the construction province for Todaiji Temple. Blacksmiths from Todaiji Temple moved to Suo in the early Kamakura period, and the Niou school flourished there until the Edo period.
The name Niou is said to have come from the fact that at the end of the Kamakura period, Souzaburo Kiyotsuna cut the chains of the Niou statues with a Tachi he had made himself and rescued them When the Nyorai Hall was damaged by fire in Kizaki village, Suo province, and he thereafter took the name Niou Saburo.
Many of his works have a strong Yamato influence, but some are indistinguishable from those of Sosyu Yukimitsu and Aoe.
