- 杢目肌に、小杢目肌交じり、地沸厚くつき、地景太く入り、鉄明るく冴える。Mokume-hada mixed Komokume-hada, Jinie and Chikei finely thick. Iron is blight and clear.

- 元平は、延享元年（1744）に奥元直の嫡子として生まれ、名を奥考左衛門と称し、父のもとで鍛刀の技術を学び、38歳で薩州島津家藩工となり、寛政元年には大和守を受領している。伯耆守正幸と共に薩摩新々刀の双璧と言われ、新々刀屈指の名工である。文政九年七月十五日84才没。この刀は、元平64才の作で、身幅広く3.3cmもあり、先幅も広く、鋒延びる豪壮な体配で、大小の地沸がキラキラと輝き、太く地景が入る美しく冴えた地鉄に、沸匂極めて深い互の目乱れを焼き、足太く頻りに入り、地刃盛んに沸づき、金筋掛るなど働き豊かで、地刃共に冴え渡り、覇気溢れ、頗る健全な最高傑作である。元平には、次男元武・三男元安と2人の弟がいるが、元安との合作刀は少なく希少である。Motohira was born in the first year of Enkyo (1744) as a son of Nao Okumoto, and his name was Okugozaemon. In the first year of Kansei, he received Mamoru Yamato. He is said to be the best of Satsuma new swords with Masayuki Hoki, and is one of the best master craftsmen of new swords. He died at the age of 84 on July 15, 1945.
